Renters Insurance: Protection You Can Afford

Ever worry that an airline will lose your luggage? Or that someone will break into your car and steal your laptop?

Unfortunately, bad luck can happen to any of us. "But what," you may ask, "does this have to do with renters insurance?"

Renters insurance programs like the Esurance Homeowners Insurance Program (EHIP) cover your belongings whether they’re stored at home, brought with you on a trip, or packed in your car.

You’re also protected with liability coverage. So if someone slips and falls on your just mopped kitchen floor, you’re covered.

Yet, many of us forgo renters insurance because we assume we're already covered. But, the fact is, your landlord’s insurance covers only the structure of the building.

Renters insurance is also more affordable than you may realize— often less than a dollar a day! Considering that the Federal Bureau of Investigation reports the average loss from a burglary to be $1,725, renters insurance covers what you might not be able to replace on your own.

Don’t be left empty-handed. Get a free online quote from EHIP and see how affordable it is.

Got more questions? Take a look below for answers:

What does renters insurance cover?
Renters insurance serves to protect you in a variety of circumstances. For EHIP, this includes liability incidents as well as cases of peril, including theft, vandalism, wind damage from hurricanes, and smoke damage from fires.

What does liability protection entail?
Personal liability protection includes unintentional bodily injury and property damage. It covers you if a guest in your home is unintentionally injured and sues you. This coverage follows you everywhere, and may even cover you while you’re away from home. For example, you may be covered if you bumped into someone at a supermarket and they fell into a display and sued you for injuries.

EHIP also includes Medical Payments. This coverage is designed to help you keep someone from filing a lawsuit against you if their injuries aren’t extensive. If you’re sued, your personal liability coverage would take over.

Am I covered by EHIP if I live in a house or dorm?
Yes. Whether you rent an apartment, house or dorm room, you’re covered.

Can roommates be on the same policy?
While it depends on the insurance carrier, with EHIP, roommates are included on the policy as long as you include them as additional insureds.

How does renters insurance reimburse lost/stolen/damaged belongings?
There are 2 types of reimbursements: payout actual cash value (ACV) or replacement cost coverage (RCC). ACV pays the current cost to replace your items minus the depreciated value. RCC reimburses you the amount you paid for the lost or damaged goods.

Each state has different requirements. Most EHIP policies are sold with ACV provision, but if you’re interested in RCC, you can either select it during the quote process or contact customer service. RCC will cost you more, but will also pay out more if you file a claim.

How do I choose a deductible?
Your renters insurance deductible is the predetermined amount you agree to pay when you file a claim. So if you filed a claim for $2,200 worth of damages and had a $500 deductible, you’d pay the first $500 and the insurance would pay $1,700.

When selecting an amount, it’s best to choose a deductible you can afford while keeping in mind that higher premiums offer more protection.

Does EHIP offer additional protection for damage due to earthquakes or floods?
In certain states, you may be able to add earthquake coverage to your policy by paying a higher premium. EHIP doesn’t offer flood coverage.

Are more costly items covered? It depends on the value. If you have an unusually expensive item, you’ll probably need to purchase a separate rider.

How do I know what to claim?
It’s best to inventory your belongings in case you ever have to file a claim. The Esurance Insight,
Got stuff? Time to Take Inventory offers tips to help you record your possessions.

Can I count on EHIP’s coverage?
Yes, you can! EHIP is rated "A Prime" (unsurpassed) by Demotech for financial strength and ability to pay claims.
