Dear Policyholder,

Summer is here, and with that comes driving vacations for many of you. Because it's that time of year and based on your interests, in this edition of our policyholder newsletter, we'll provide you with some tips about saving money on gas, along with other timely information.

Since it's the season to enjoy the great outdoors, we're also proud to acknowledge the four winners of our "Greenest Policyholder" contest. Our prize-winning policyholders offered their most innovative tips about how they each help the environment. Esurance is very proud to support our policyholders' efforts to make our communities a little greener.

Please continue to let us know what other topics you'd like to hear about in our triannual newsletter. Without your input and support, we would not be one of the fastest growing auto insurance companies in America. And, whether you're going near or far this summer, safe travels!

Best regards,

Save Money at the Pump this Summer

Summer roadtrips are a great American pastime. The Rockies,
Mt. Rushmore, the Washington Monument— you can see them all— and everything in between. Yet, as gas prices continue to rise, cruising between national landmarks can get pretty pricey. Luckily, Esurance has some tips to help you save gas, whether you're traveling across the country or just across town.

Drive Smart

  • Avoid carrying extra weight in your trunk. More weight = more gas used.

  • Drive slower. You can increase your gas mileage up to 15% if you travel at 55, rather than 65 miles per hour.

  • Use your car's overdrive when your speed is high enough (found on 5-speed manual transmissions and some 4-speed automatic transmissions).

  • Avoid accelerating too quickly or slamming on your brakes. Both actions are gas wasters.

  • Turn off your ignition rather than letting your engine idle for long periods. Restarting your car uses less gas.

  • Roll up your windows and use your air vents. This will reduce the amount of drag on your vehicle, increasing engine efficiency.

  • Drive a fuel-efficient or hybrid vehicle. You could save hundreds of dollars a year on gas, and you'll be doing the environment a favor.

    Drive a Fine-Tuned Machine

  • Replace worn spark plugs and bad brakes. Both can contribute to lower gas mileage.

  • Get your car serviced regularly with special attention to your fuel, ignition, and emission control systems. Problems with these systems result in your car using more gas.

  • Change your oil, oil filters, and transmission fluid regularly. Oil and transmission fluid help your engine run smoothly, which makes it more fuel-efficient.

  • Make sure that your tires are properly inflated and aligned.

By following these tips, you'll improve your car's performance and save money at the gas pump. Happy trails!

      Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

    Buying a new car?

With no end in sight to rising gas prices, fuel-efficient vehicles are becoming a hot commodity. Generally, smaller cars get better mileage, so if you're trying to save on gas, you may want to stay away from SUVs and luxury sedans.

You may be surprised to find that not all fuel-efficient vehicles are hybrids and two-seaters, however. If you're looking for a larger, family car, the Hyundai Sonata ranks as the U.S. Department of Energy's most fuel-efficient large sedan, while the Ford Focus station wagon is the most efficient in its class.

Another tip is that 5-speed manual transmissions are almost always more fuel-efficient than their automatic counterparts.
